IDEA:
Happiness is an elusive creature that tends to vanish the moment we shine the light of consciousness upon it. If, as brain research increasingly confirms, the mere absence of stress, pain, or problems is not enough to make us happy, that places the responsibility in our own hands.
ACTION:
1. Don’t confuse surface joviality with what may be happiness for you. Some people seem to find joy easily and naturally, but for others, happiness is a choice. It flows from the decisions they make, from the challenges they set themselves, and from the attitude they take in the face of reality. Such happiness does not preclude feeling deep sadness at times, nor does it necessitate wearing a mask of surface cheer.
2. Practice gratitude on a daily basis at a regular time and place. Perhaps when you turn out the light, think of three good things that happened that day. These might be actions, experiences, or simply moments of awareness. Sunlight sparkling on a snowy landscape. The happy shouts and laughter of children on a playground. The glimpse of a flower, a bird, or a butterfly. Music. Sinking into a warm tub. Someone’s thoughtfulness, including your own.
3. Do something, especially for those you love, whether that circle is narrow or wide enough to encompass the globe. We are doers by nature, which is why action springing from free will and our own choice trumps all else in bringing us happiness.
4. Remind yourself that good things will happen and bad things will happen, but the level of overall happiness is yours to choose.
